The following graph shows all of Girls Rock Radio's income and expenses since we
began programming operations in June of 2006. Green represents Income to
the station, while red represents our Expenses.
I've omitted the actual dollar amounts as they are not important, but
the graph was generated in a spreadsheet using the precise income and expense
amounts I report to my accountant. It represents the correct
relationship between income and expenses.
It's not pretty, is it?
The graph can best summed up by merely observing that, for every dollar
Girls Rock Radio spends keeping the station on the air, we receive about one
dime. In other words, if the red bar represented $1.00 of money spent,
then the green bar represents $0.10 of money contributed.
I wish I could say that ninety cents is all that Girls Rock Radio has lost over the
last nearly two years we've been broadcasting, but the actual numbers are really
rather significant - not to mention scary! In reality, the number that the red
bar represents is in the Thousands of dollars!
How many businesses do you know of that
can actually continue doing what they do given that kind of loss? Not to put
too fine a point on it, but consider also that I have devoted myself as exclusively
as I can to Girls Rock Radio. So who's paying the bills around here, I often ask
myself? The groceries, the gas & electric bill (which are not shown in the graph,)
the phone bill (also not in the graph,) the mortgage(!) ...
What can you do to help?
(Be sure to read the special comment at the bottom of this page!)
The obvious answer is that we need money to keep the station on the air. Other
concepts are being explored, but let me be blunt. It takes income to fuel
any sort of expansion of the station. The Catch 22 is that it takes expansion to
fuel any sort income to the station. But I really cannot get caught up in these
Chicken or the Egg paradoxes, so instead I take action today by simply asking
you to contribute to the station.
I once noted that if every one of the friends we have on
MySpace
contributed just $1.00 per month, all would be well with the world. But in this
world, there is that 80/20 rule that says that 80% of the load is
carried by 20% of the people. So I revised my original thought to note that if
20% of our MySpace friends contributed just $5 per month, all would be well
with the world. I've apparently got the math all wrong because even that has
never happened. Not even close!
Why bother? Isn't Internet Radio a stupid, worthless service anyway?
I think not! I believe it is one of the last places you can find great music!
Without a lot of work, anyway. Consider what you go through to on iTunes just
to flush out a great playlist. All the sifting through all that music - only
30 second clips at that! Napster at least gives you the full song to listen to
in most cases, but still the work falls to you to ferret out what's good. Internet
Radio does that for you. When you find a station you love, all you have to do
is just kick back and listen. Soon you find yourself with lots of song ideas
to fill your iPod. At that point you can make informed purchasing decisions.
And I see that Internet Radio works and is fulfilling the hopes and dreams of other
station owners. Take a look at
Radio Paradise, for instance.
My friend Bill Goldsmith operates Radio Paradise, and if you visit his site, you
will find he is doing so well he is even able to routinely give away vacations to
exotic places like Costa Rica. Girls Rock Radio would LOVE to send some of our
lucky listeners on exotic vacations like that, but it takes surplus revenue to be
able to pull that off. Bill commands a fiercely loyal listener community that
donates money to his station on a monthly basis. Why has Girls Rock Radio
failed to achieve that level of success?
Looking beyond the money...
I don't have the revenue to hire a marketing genius to steer a bold course through
these financially trying times for Girls Rock Radio. I know I will have to start
adding advertising to the website to try to jump start any sort of revenue stream.
I've really not wanted to do that, but I really see no other way. Do you? Are you
up to the challenge of helping move Girls Rock Radio to the next level? Are you
willing to contribute that expertise to the station? Obviously, we're in no
position to pay you a salary.
Point is, money aside, I'm not shy about asking for help. Well, maybe I am. I
should have done so two years ago. But better now than never, I guess, or after the station
takes a fatal financial fall.
I want Girls Rock Radio to be able to make a difference in people's lives in ways
that I haven't even envisioned yet, but there are many ways that I already have.
Like these:
For Signed Artists:
To strengthen this venue for them to be re-discovered in ways the conventional
music industry has not provided.
For Independent Artists:
To strengthen this venue for them to be discovered for the very first time. To
find additional ways to help them grow and mature as artists and to help them
to expand their worldwide audience.
For Media Professionals:
To provide a place for them to gain experience in the field of radio and media marketing
in general. To help them gain industry exposure. To become a coveted asset on their Resume.
For Our Audience:
To provide awesome music, yes, but to be so much more than just a radio station.
To bring interesting, provocative, informative Lifestyle Features into all our
lives making GRR not only the soundtrack to our amazing lives but to contribute to
that amazing life in measurable ways!
Help us make all of this come true. Contact the station if you'd like to help.
Contribute some cash if you can. Contribute often if you can. Thank you for interest
and for your support.
Special Comment:
Some of you may be asking, "Why would I give you any of my money or my talent? What have you done to deserve it?"
A valid question! Unfortunately, I must answer it with questions. Important questions. Questions that I
must have the answers to if Girls Rock Radio is ever to rise above its current status. I've mentioned some
of the ways I want Girls Rock Radio to impact and enrich your lives, but one thing I've been shown over
and over again is that I cannot read minds. So, please, tell me - What is it that you want from Girls
Rock Radio? How are we falling short of your expectations? How can we better serve you? One of the greatest
gifts you can give Girls Rock Radio is your opinion.
